Ethical and Contractual Considerations in Biobanking
To support seamless sharing of biosamples, data, reagents, and microbes among Canadian academic institutions, the Universal Data and Biological Material Transfer Agreement (UDBMTA) was developed in partnership with the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). Vetted by over 30 Canadian institutions, the UDBMTA served as the foundation for the governing Data and Sample Sharing Agreement (gDSSA)—a broader, nationally applicable materials transfer document. Having a ready-to-use MTA process is essential to the Canadian Biobanking Alliance (CBA)’s mission of preparedness, helping avoid delays in the exchange of scientific data and materials.
Additionally, the Bioethics team has streamlined multi-jurisdictional research ethics approval by adopting the Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO) template. This provides a rapid approval pathway for minimal-risk research and enables inter-institutional collaboration across Ontario. These pre-established tools position the CBA to lead national biobanking efforts in academic research, clinical trials, and other preparedness initiatives.
